Wes - Thanks a lot for arranging this. It's sure to be interesting. Bill Bennett and Korbin Bennett-Gold will go.

First 15 to respond get to go next Tuesday. We'll see about a repeat trip if there's interest and need.

Parents - we'll need to figure out driving. I can take two additional in my jeep. Who else can go and take some kids?

All - please respond promptly to Wes either directly to his address wesley.a.green at lmco.com to avoid the clutter on this address that everyone gets, or, if you're email-challenged, just reply to this note and we'll forgive you... Wes will acknowledge your email and let you know if you're in the first 15 or not - if you don't hear from him within a day, he didn't get it, try again. Send him your full name, he may not know everyone's last name.

Cool!

Bill

  Hi gang,
The Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory arranged to have you tour their manufacturing facility. This is the home of the largest mirrors in the world - right here in town - right under the football stadium. They polish mirrors up to 8.4 meters in diameter (28 ft) to the exact shape to within 0.000001 inches (yes - that's the right number of zeros). There are two mirrors being produced right now.

As Bill mentioned there is a capacity for 15 people - both students and parents are invited. If there is more interest we could arrange another tour. If anybody needs to use the elevator instead of the stairs it needs to be mentioned ahead of time because the elevator is in a normally off limits area.

  The Rules:
  No open toed shoes
No backpacks (you can leave them at the front desk)

  The skinny:
-Tour starts at 4:00 sharp - they want us out by 5:00. This means you will have a small rush to leave school, get parking, walk to the mirror lab and make it by 4:00. Erica will check of names of tour participants at the door.
-There is a 20 minute video then I can answer some questions (I'm the tour guide since they no longer fill the position)
  -Casting lab
  -Polishing Lab
  -End of tour

Parking may be a pain. There is meter parking right outside the lab but it may be full. There are several parking garages with a bit of a walk. Please note that cherry garage is not a pay lot and therefore can not take visitors.
  http://parking.arizona.edu/visitors/parking.php for parking
  http://iiewww.ccit.arizona.edu/uamap/ for a general map.
You are going to "Stadium East". The entrance is at the north east corner of the stadium. If you can't find the stadium... look up. It's big - you can't miss it.
My number is 906-9677 if you fall behind or get lost on the way.

I need to supply a list of names so please respond with all the members of the family that would like to go.

  Hope you can make it!

  Cheers,
  Wes

    Hi all
Wes Green has offered to arrange a tour of the mirror lab at U of A, where very large mirrors for telescopes are made. This should be very interesting. Probably it will be next week on Tuesday in place of the usual build meeting. Wes will send a followup email with details after he confirms availability.

The group is limited to 15, so if we have more interested than that, we'll have to set up two tour dates.

Thanks to Wes for the idea and arrangements. Watch this space for more news...
    Bill
