[CRUSH-build] frames and transmissions

Reminder - it's an ODD Saturday coming up, so I expect to see many eager builders this weekend. The craft show fund raiser is on the same day, so we'll be dividing our time somewhat supporting that. This can be a couple of students an hour at a time, so doesn't have to have a big impact on the build meeting. Counting this weekend, we have only three (count'em, 3) Saturday meetings scheduled before the FIRST kickoff on Jan 7 (Nov 19, Dec 3, Dec 17). Do you feel ready???

It's great that we're getting some frame design and fab going. I would suggest that making three frames is somewhat overly ambitious. If we get one made and rolling before Jan 7 kickoff, I'll be really happy. To have a chance, it's critical that students and mentors get very task oriented and come to each meeting knowing what needs to get done, and get'er done. Also, I think this is a great opportunity to pull the CAD and machining groups together. I suggested yesterday to Mr Calik that his group work together with the machining group to use the frame design as the first chance to use our CAD skills to model something we'll actually build. he liked this idea. I'd like to see this coupling happen on Saturday.

I also believe finishing the transmission is important, so I want to keep both activities going in parallel. I have been trying to make some more of my time available for this, since it's both a personal interest in the transmission as well as a desire of mine to get back to the metal and toolwork - I miss it. I have been going in with Korbin on some off-meeting times to work with him on transmission parts.

I think we'll have to buy a boring head. I used a 7/8" end mill to make the holes for that the bearings press into, but it's a loose fit and needs to be a press fit. A boring head can be used to make an undersized 7/8" hole. We could also do it with the rotary table, but the setup will be more tedious. The plates I've been working on will have to be remade. It's all a learning experience....
